India e-Visa Types & Travel Reasons
The India e-Visa serves as a digital travel authorization that permits qualifying visitors to enter India for the purposes outlined below:
- Leisure and sightseeing
- Business-related travel
- Medical care and treatment
- Accompanying a patient for medical purposes
1. Tourist Travel Authorization (e-Visa)
The e-Tourist Visa, also known as the India e-Visa, is a digital travel authorization that allows eligible visitors to enter and travel within India for the purposes listed below:
- Leisure travel and sightseeing
- Visiting friends or family members
- Participation in yoga or wellness retreats
- Enrollment in short-term, non-formal courses (up to 6 months)
- Unpaid voluntary activities (limited to 1 month)
The 1-Month option permits two entries, with a maximum stay of 30 days per visit. The 1-Year option allows multiple entries, with up to 90 days permitted per visit. Travelers from select countries may be eligible for stays of up to 180 days per visit under the 1-Year option.
Certain passport holders, including those from Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, may remain in India for a maximum of 180 days when using the 1-Year tourist e-Visa.
2. Business Travel Authorization (e-Visa)
The business e-Visa is designed for foreign travelers who need to enter India for approved commercial or professional activities. Permitted purposes include:
- Setting up or exploring industrial or commercial opportunities
- Conducting sales, purchasing, or trade-related activities
- Attending technical, professional, or business meetings
- Recruiting staff or manpower
- Participating in exhibitions, trade fairs, or business events
- Working as a specialist or expert on an active project
- Conducting organized or guided tours
This category allows multiple entries and supports stays of up to 180 days in total.
3. Medical Treatment Travel Authorization
The medical e-Visa is issued to foreign nationals traveling to India for short-term medical care or treatment. This authorization is granted exclusively to the patient and does not cover family members or accompanying travelers.
This visa permits up to three separate entries using the same authorization and remains valid for 60 days from the date of the first arrival.
4. Medical Companion Travel Authorization
The medical companion travel authorization is designed for eligible foreign nationals who are accompanying a patient traveling to India for short-term medical care. This authorization is issued exclusively to companions and not to the patient themselves.
Applicants seeking this authorization must provide relevant details from the patient’s approved medical travel authorization. A maximum of two companions may be linked to a single patient application.
This companion authorization permits up to three separate entries and remains valid for a period of 60 days, calculated from the date of the first arrival.
This travel permission is strictly limited to individuals accompanying a patient who holds a valid medical travel authorization.
5.Application Rules and Entry Requirements
- This travel authorization cannot be extended or changed to another visa type.
- Entry is not permitted into restricted, protected, or military-controlled regions.
- Passports must remain valid for a minimum of six months from the date of arrival and contain at least two unused pages for immigration stamps.
- Each traveler must hold their own passport, regardless of age.
- A printed or digital copy of the approved e-Visa should be carried throughout the stay.
- Proof of onward or return travel is required at the time of entry.
- Travelers must be able to demonstrate sufficient financial means to cover their stay.
Important:
This electronic travel authorization is not issued to holders of diplomatic passports or international travel documents. Individuals holding Pakistani nationality or passports are required to apply through a standard visa process instead of the electronic option.
6. Countries Approved for Online Application
Nationals from the countries listed below are permitted to submit an application for the India e-Visa.
Eligible travelers with a valid passport can complete their application through the online system.

7. Required Documents for Online Travel Authorization
Standard Documentation for All Applicants:
To apply successfully, the following items are required:
- A clear, color scan of the biographical information page of the applicant’s current passport
- A recent passport-style color photograph that meets the following conditions:
- Displays a full, front-facing view of the applicant’s face
- Taken against a plain white background
- Head positioned centrally and clearly in focus
- Face and hair visible from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin
This travel authorization permits multiple entries with a maximum allowable stay of up to 180 days, depending on the visa category.
Additional Documentation for Medical Travel Applications
In addition to the standard requirements listed above, applicants traveling for medical purposes must also submit:
- An official letter issued by the medical institution
- Details of the healthcare facility where treatment will be received
Extra Documents for Special Tourist Activities
Applicants traveling for unpaid volunteer work or short-term educational programs are required to provide supplementary documentation in addition to the standard requirements, including:
- A confirmation or invitation letter from the relevant organization within India
At the time of submitting the application, it is not mandatory to upload all supporting documents. These may be requested and provided at a later stage if required.
Health Regulations – Yellow Fever
Travelers arriving from regions affected by Yellow Fever must present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Card upon arrival.
Individuals traveling from certain countries are required to carry an official Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate. This requirement applies to travelers from the following regions:
Angola, Argentina, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Colombia, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, French Guiana, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Suriname, South Sudan, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Venezuela.
Important: Travelers who are required to present a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate and fail to do so may be subject to quarantine measures for a period of up to six days upon arrival.

Travelers may exit India through any authorized immigration checkpoint. If arrival is planned through a non-approved entry location, a standard visa must be obtained through the nearest embassy or consular office prior to travel.
9. Check Your e-Visa Application Progress
Applicants will receive email updates regarding the progress of their online travel authorization. Once the application is approved, the electronic visa will be delivered directly to the email address provided during submission.

Travelers may depart India via any approved immigration checkpoint. Entry through locations not designated for electronic visas requires applying for a traditional visa through an embassy or consulate in advance.
10. How the Online Visa Application Works
To complete an online travel authorization request, applicants must have a valid passport, a working email address, and a payment card.
All personal details entered in the application, including full name, date and place of birth, gender, marital status, residential address, nationality, and passport number, must exactly match the information shown in the passport. Travelers must use the same passport for travel that was used during the application process.
Applicants will also be required to answer a short set of background questions to confirm eligibility, such as current employment details and the ability to financially support themselves during their stay.
Qualified travelers may submit applications for tourist, business, or medical travel authorizations through the online application system.
